Gavin

Hairless Chinese Crested, Male

Estimated 5 years old

11 lbs

History:Gavin was part of a large cruelty case involving 242 dogs just outside of Houston.  The conditions Gavin lived in most, if not all, of his life included filthy small wire cages filled with too many dogs and neglect that is typical of puppy mills.  He has many behaviors typical of puppy mill dogs that we will educate his adopter(s) about further.

Breed: Gavin is considered a “hairy hairless” Chinese Crested, meaning that he has more hair than a “true hairless” but is not completely covered in hair.  In order to maintain the typical hairless crested look some light grooming is required but that is based on the preference of the owner.  His skin has blemishes more like those seen on human skin with acne due to years of neglect.  His skin requires consistent care to improve its condition although some pearly cysts will likely remain forever.  We will let his adopter know what his foster uses to help his skin. His skin must also be protected from the sun if there is going to be prolonged exposure either with clothing or sunscreen.  He will require clothing in the winter. Cresteds for the most part are typically shy and often described as more “cat-like” due to their independent and aloof nature.  Exercise requirements are low and typically cresteds show short bursts of energy interspersed between lots of sleeping. Breed knowledge is preferred but a willingness to research and learn more about the breed is a requirement for his home.

Personality: Gavin is a shy and nervous boy who requires consistent work on his socialization skills.  A slow introduction and giving him plenty of space to explore on his own is best.  Once he trusts you he is submissive. He is not afraid to let you know his limits and will show his teeth if frightened, but it is out of fear. Loud noises scare him and that is the only time I’ve heard him bark.  He has short bursts of energy where he plays with Gwen or does “zoomies” in the house followed by many hours of napping.  He is not comfortable for any amount of time with napping on your lap or immediately beside you, so do not expect him to be super cuddly.

Vetting: Gavin is up to date on all shots (rabies, DA2PPv+Cv, Bordatella, canine influenza), heartworm negative and on heartworm and flea preventative, and neutered.  He has been treated for a flea infestation and intestinal parasites. He is finishing treatment for an upper respiratory infection and ear mites. Before arriving at Rockers Rescue he had at least one tooth removed during her dental cleaning. But typical of hairless cresteds, he has missing teeth (this is genetic). For this reason he likes regular food soaked in water to make it soft, mixed in with some wet food. He can eat soft treats too.  He has a floating rib on one side but this is a common anatomic variant and benign condition. He is also microchipped.

Home requirements: Being such a small dog, Gavin requires a home without other large dogs that could trample him.  Likewise due to his size and personality, a home with teenagers and older is best.  All members of the household must be able to work with him on socialization or else he will not continue to progress. All cresteds, but especially puppy mill dogs, require a VERY securely fenced yard.  He is NOT leash trained and is progressing well with potty training but we cannot guarantee that he will not have accidents.  He sometimes uses a potty pad if available.  He does have some marking behaviors and occasionally will wear a belly band to prevent him from urinating on furniture.

We have videos as well.

About Applying to Adopt:   This pet has a $150 adoption donation fee (microchip fee is included) This fee generally NEVER covers how much we actually spend on the animal. We are a 501c3 non profit so the fee goes back into our volunteer rescue to help us save more lives. We function solely on donations.
