Roxie

Hairless Chinese Crested, Female

Estimated 2 years old

3.5 lbs

History: Roxie was part of a large cruelty case involving 242 dogs just outside of Houston.  The conditions Roxie lived in most, if not all, of her life included filthy small wire cages filled with too many dogs and neglect that is typical of puppy mills.  She has many behaviors typical of puppy mill dogs that we will educate her adopter(s) about further.

Breed:  Roxie is considered a “hairy hairless” Chinese Crested, meaning that she has more hair than a “true hairless” but is not completely covered in hair.  In order to maintain the typical hairless crested look some light grooming is required but that is based on the preference of the owner.  Her skin has blemishes more like those seen on human skin due to her years of neglect.  Her skin requires consistent care to improve it’s condition although some pigmentation and pearly cysts will remain forever.  Her skin must also be protected from the sun if there is going to be prolonged exposure either with clothing or sunscreen.  She will also require clothing in the winter. Cresteds for the most part are typically shy and often described as more “cat-like” due to their independent and aloof nature.  Exercise requirements are low and typically cresteds show short bursts of energy interspersed between lots of sleeping. Breed knowledge is preferred but a willingness to research and learn more about the breed is a requirement for her home.

Personality: Roxie was shy at first but quickly warmed up and her sweet and loving personality has started to shine.  Although she has become more outgoing in her foster home, she will need a home that is patient and understanding of her background.  She will likely always have a shyness about her, especially with strangers.  She interacts well with other dogs; although, she is not one to play with them.  Right now she is most active in the morning and evening around meal times and tends to play for about 5 minutes at a time and then sleep for hours.  She also has a curious side and likes to follow people around to find out what they are up to.  She will bark when excited or when she is trying to get your attention.  Once Roxie is comfortable with you, she enjoys sitting in your lap and snuggling in bed.

Vetting: Roxie is up to date on all shots (rabies, DA2PPv+Cv, Bordatella, canine influenza), heartworm negative and on heartworm and flea preventative, and spayed.  She has been treated for a flea infestation and intestinal parasites. Dental cleaning done.  She is missing several teeth and since arriving at Rockers Rescue she’s had 2 teeth removed during her dental cleaning.  For this reason she likes canned dog food and she can eat soft treats.  Also microchipped.

Home requirements: Being such a small dog, Roxie requires a home without other large dogs that could trample her.  Likewise due to her size and personality, a home with teenagers and older is best.  All cresteds, but especially puppy mill dogs, require a VERY securely fenced yard.  She is NOT leash trained and is kennel trained, but we cannot guarantee that she will not have accidents.  She does use a potty pad if available. She is still unsure of grass at the moment but is learning. Keep in mind she is very small and not even 4lbs. Larger dogs could really do damage to her on accident, she needs a home with other small dogs so she is safe.

About Applying to Adopt:  This pet has a $150 adoption donation fee (microchip fee is included) This fee generally NEVER covers how much we actually spend on the animal. We are a 501c3 non profit so the fee goes back into our volunteer rescue to help us save more lives. We function solely on donations.
