Lexi

  • Alias names include "Lexi Butterball" "Butterbutt"
  • Around 10 years old female cocker spaniel.
  • Currently overweight! A hefty 43lbs at last weigh.
  • Very mellow and sweet. Can be fiesty though!
  • Loves following you around and laying around.

You can follow this link to read the longer version about how we came across Lexi and the pup we saved before her. https://www.adoptapet.com/rockersrescue/2017/10/27/afosterslove/

Requirements: Before we tell you how awesome she is, you might as well know the knitty gritty! Needs: fenced yard, able to lift heavy weight, can handle cleaning eyes when having allergies, only respectable older children, she does love following my 5 year old.  Financially able to handle a seniors current and future needs! Seniors can be expensive. Will need regular grooming! Her nails grow quickly too. She is arthritic and needs glucosamine to help. Also needs diet food until she is an appropriate weight. Adopter must understand her current weight is not okay.  Understanding to boundaries- she snaps out if she doesn't want moved at the time. Has hyperkeratosis of the nose and paw pads, we put coconut oil on her nose nightly when she gets her glucosamine. Prone to straining a leg at times due to the arthritis and weight. During that time she will likely need carried some to help the leg heal back. If she is hurting bad she may whimper in the night, pain med can help.

History:  Lexi was surrendered to our local open intake shelter that has to euthanize for space. Seniors don't get to go in adoptions. I was contacted about her right after having my foster cocker spaniel pass away from heart failure. I was very upset but her picture was pulling me...so I went to the shelter to meet her. The person that surrendered her gave no info other than her name and she was over 10 years old age. That was ALL they wanted to say. She became a Rockers Rescue dog.

She was in a neglected state.  Fleas…..EVERYWHERE. TONS. Nails under the paw pads. Overweight. Eyes you couldn’t even see. Teeth barely hanging in with gums bleeding from the infection. Hair missing from the fleas. Eyes goopy. A large wound on her rear. Hyperkeratosis of the nose and paw pads (extremely rough and splitting in a sense)  But yet…. the sweetest dog. Amazingly calm. I will put her current status and vetting below.

About Lexi: It's hard for me to think of how to describe her. She's very mellow but can be fiesty. She follows me around the house or stays by my daughter. She likes being in your presence but not in your lap. Knows her name and will come if you call her. She likes sleeping in bed BUT she needs help getting up there. Whoever adopts Lexi must be capable of lifting her heavy butt. I'm younger and its hard for me to do, so this is important someone can handle it.  In bed she mainly just lays at the foot of the bed.  I don't think she was use to being on a couch but when its bedtime she will step up toward the bed awaiting me to lift her up. I enjoy that little routine. She re-hurt her front left leg one day. The vets found her to be very arthritic. She now gets glucosamine tablets daily to help her joints. She started waking me up whining in the night for water but I think it was due to her joints aching. I've been giving her a pain med at night to help her.

She is potty trained. I just nudge her along out the door in the morning, mid day and afternoon to go do her business. She isn't one to stay out! She will want right back in if she doesnt have you to go outside with her. She will bark if you aren't paying attention to let her back in. She will also stand by the door if she wants out. Generally I have to make her go though. She can be stubborn. It's important she has a fenced yard. She is not one to have you pull her by the collar to do something, she will snap at you haha! God love that sassy girl when she's being stubborn. If she is laying somewhere and doesn't want you to pick her up to move her, she will snap out. I'm not sure if she's sore or just being an old lady grump. I just smile and tell her to behave and quit being grumpy. I really do adore all of those weird little old lady quirks about her.

Quiet (unless she thinks there's an intruder then she is perfect for guarding.) She had not met my better half yet because he was away for work. He got home late at night and came in the house. She came unglued, haha. I had to turn the light on and go to him to show her that he was okay. She was howling, barking, standing her ground on the bed. I was honestly proud of her. What person wouldn't want a dog to protect them like that. Not that her pudgy self could do an awful lot, but still!

I wouldn't feel good with a young child around her that cannot respect boundaries. My 5 year old is great with her but also doesn't dote on her. They just sort of hang out together. Lexi loves following my daughter around and sitting near her.

She enjoys going places in the car. Gets excited when i bring out her hair bows and the leash.  Great on a leash too UNLESS she doesn't want to go with you. At an event one of our volunteers tried to walk her to potty and she sat down like a pig. She didn't want to leave her foster mommy. Not one to be forced to walk. I've had people from the shelter say she's one of the sweetest dogs they've ever met. I mention all these grumpy quirks because a possible owner would HAVE to be able to adapt to those and lift her. At events she is an angel. Everyone adores Lexi and her hair bows.

Oh and she got to where she loves grabbing a toy sometimes and playing with it. She is a toy grump. If she has it, no other dogs can come near.

I honestly would adopt this girl myself but if I find her a great home it gives me space to save another life. We can make sure she finds a home where she is happy. Where she can brighten someones day just as she does mine. I know someone is out there that can cherish her the same.

Current status and vetting: So Lexi is overweight right now. Her nails were able to be cut back. The nose and wound have healed up a lot. She had a dental cleaning with lots of teeth pulled (she can still eat hard food.Mainly her front teeth gone so she does tend to drool some now out the right side.) The vet believes she is already spayed. She was heartworm tested and was negative. Given proheart (6 month heartworm prevention injection) and Bravecto ( 3 month flea/tick protection). The Bravecto also helped her skin heal. It is important Lexi stay on regular monthly heartworm prevention! We got her vaccinations updated. She had bloodwork done that all looked well. A fecal done that was also good. Overall - she seems healthy! Her eyes are a little drainy at times and it seems to be allergies. Whomever adopts her needs to be comfortable with cleaning her eyes if they get gunky when she's having an allergy spell. She requires glucosamine to help her joints (her left leg she tends to limp with as it hurts the most.) Pain meds as needed if she hurts a leg. Needs diet food until she is an appropriate weight.    She will also be microchipped  (that fee is included in the adoption donation fee. It is a one time fee so no yearly expenses. We will register pet on our end then you will check your email and check the registration. From there you will get reminders to update your information. Easy peasy)

About applying for adoption.  We have a slew of pictures so if you want to see more just let us know.  We can schedule any meets after we have an approved application or you can ask when we will have her at an event if you'd like to meet her (apps still must be done online.)

Lexi has a $150 adoption donation which in NO way covers how much we spend on her vetting expense and care. (I know we've spent around $500 on Lexi gal)  The donation goes back into the 501c3 non profit rescue to help us so that we can continue saving other lives. To apply: #1. Email rockersrescue@gmail.com and tell them you will be filling out an app. #2. fill out the app at www.adoptapet.com/rockersrescue/dogadoptionapp/
