Ziggy
Intake April 7, 2017 from Caddo Parish Animal Service History: Ziggy was a stray at our local shelter. He was labeled as a “poodle with a suspected flea allergy” but while photographing him with our volunteer/Instagram curator she recognized he was actually a Hairless Chinese Crested! She owns 3 chinese crested herself and despite Ziggy’s disheveled appearance, could recognize him with the characteristic hare-like feet, feathered tail and hair pattern that was not due to a flea allergy but rather a “hairy hairless” crested that had not been groomed in a while. He was instantly swept away to the vet to clear up his eye discharge and treat his upper respiratory infection. That night was also groomed appropriately and has since been getting a lot of TLC for his skin to hear the damage from sun and being out in the elements for a while.
Personality: Ziggy is a small body who packs a lot of personality! Like any crested he is very loyal and likes to be next to “his human” but not necessarily in their lap (as cresteds like to pretend they are also independent). He LOVES to have his belly rubbed and will roll over at your feet and keep begging for more rub! He enjoys a walk and like any boy is very interested in sniffing and marking everything, but because he’s so small anything over 1 mile is too much for him. He has good energy but also sleeps a lot. He can be quite vocal and likes to act like a big dog, but don’t let his big bark or playful growl fool you, he is a little sweetie who wouldn’t hurt anything. He gets along with all 5 of my dogs and isn’t afraid of even the 60-lb one! Somewhat unusual for a crested, he is not shy in the least and not startled easily. He is also perfectly house trained and crate trained. I haven’t left him out to free roam yet, but he is not destructive so I would trust him. Vetting: He is now neutered. He is up to date on shots and heartworm negative. He is currently on Trifexis for heartworm/flea/tick prevention (lasts one month from date given). Treated for worms with panacur. His eye infection has been treated. His upper respiratory infection has been treated with antibiotics. He was also too anemic for his first scheduled neuter and was given vitamins and has since improved. Microchipped under the rescue (see below). Has now been neutered as well! Hairless Chinese Cresteds require some special considerations for their skin and breed experience is preferred but not necessary. Their skin can become sun burnt (especially Ziggy’s because it is white/pink) so they often wear clothes for warmth or sun protection. He is considered a “hairy hairless” meaning he has sparse hair growth over his body that will require grooming unless you prefer to let it grow out (but it will not be very thick like his feet hair). His skin was originally very dry and likely sun damaged so he has been getting daily coconut oil rubs to moisturize and heal his skin. He does not appear to have acne-prone skin as some cresteds do, but this is an issue common in the breed. We can provide more breed specific information upon request as well. About Microchip: Our animals are microchipped under the rescue. By having the animals microchipped under us it provides us with a definite option of the animal being safe if found. If the pet ever goes missing you can let us know as well so we may help find them. If we ever are called on the animal being found we will try our best for 2 weeks to get in contact with the owners (as you should also be trying to get in contact with us) and if the owner is not found after 2 weeks the animal is legally ours again via our contract. This is a GREAT safety precaution for loving families. It means you will have an awesome caring team devoted to reuniting you with your baby. We ourselves have found microchipped dogs that have been rehomed and ended up in shelters on a euthanasia list. We take this very seriously as we never want that to happen to any of our animals. We also require first option of taking an animal back if the home does not work out. You can consider us a forever family for the pets adopted from us. Link to a video of him on our facebook Rockers Rescue-Northwest La: https://www.facebook.com/RockersRescue/videos/1694234307537105/. Adoption: Must have a vet reference when filling out one of our applications. Monthly h eartworm prevention is very important to us and your pet so adopters need to be financially prepared to cover that expense. If you do not know about heartworms we would love to tell you about them. We all have to learn! Any inquiries on adoption please feel free to message us. All information stated above is the the best of our knowledge for for as long as we have known this pet. Adoption fee of $150. (this includes microchipping expense) First email us to let us know you are filling out an application as sometimes the site glitches and it will not send, rockersrescue@gmail.com then go to the following site to fill out the application. Include as much information as you can...we like to get to know our possible adopters! www.adoptapet.com/ rockersrescue/adoptionapp/.
